Kept is built to be trusted with the one thing a blocker sees, which is what you do with your phone. So this page is written to be read, not skimmed past. The short version: almost everything stays on your phone, we never see which apps you block, we don't sell or share data for advertising, and the few things that do leave your phone are listed below with the reason.
Who we are
Kept is made by Kept Focus Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17435474), registered office 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ. We are the data controller for the information described here. Contact: hello@keptfocus.app.
What stays on your phone
All of this is stored only on your device, in the app's own storage, and is never uploaded:
- Your tasks, focus sessions, earned minutes and the ledger of how you earned and spent them
- Your modes, schedules and settings
- Which apps you block. Kept uses Apple's Screen Time controls (the Family Controls and Managed Settings frameworks). Apple hands the app opaque tokens for the apps you pick, and never the names. Kept cannot see, store or send a list of your blocked apps, and neither can we.
- Your Recall decks, cards and progress, including decks you make yourself
- The friction level and check-in state the app uses to adapt
If you delete the app, this data is deleted with it.
What leaves your phone, and why
1. The accountability buddy (only if you use it)
To pair with a buddy you sign in with Sign in with Apple. We receive the identifier Apple gives us for your account and, if you choose to share it, the email address (Apple can hide your real one behind a relay). We store:
- a display name you type (1 to 40 characters), so your buddy knows who's asking
- the pairing between you and your buddy, and the unlock requests you send (a short optional reason, the time, and your buddy's yes or no)
- a device token so we can send the push notification that tells your buddy you've asked
Legal basis: performing the service you asked for (contract). Nothing about your usage, tasks, minutes or blocked apps is ever attached to your account. The database schema literally forbids it.
2. Make a deck (only when you use it)
When you type a topic and ask Kept to write a deck, the topic text, the level you picked and an anonymous install ID (a random identifier your phone generates; you can reset it in Settings) are sent to our server, which asks an AI model to write the cards. The server keeps a record of the topic, the install ID, the number of cards and the date, so we can enforce the daily limit (three decks a day per phone) and watch costs.
The AI model is provided by Anthropic. The topic text is sent to Anthropic's API to generate the cards, under Anthropic's commercial data-processing terms; Anthropic does not train its models on API inputs. Anthropic processes data in the United States; we rely on the appropriate safeguards for that transfer under UK data-protection law.
Every generated deck is labelled "Written by AI, not checked by a person". Please don't type personal information about yourself or anyone else as a topic. If you do, you can delete the deck, and you can email us to have the server record removed.
Legal basis: performing the service you asked for (contract).
3. Anonymous usage analytics (optional, on by default, one switch to turn off)
To learn whether Kept actually works, the app can send a small number of event names (for example "shield shown", "chunk spent", "focus session completed") with the anonymous install ID and a timestamp. The list of allowed events is fixed in our database and the app cannot add to it. Events never contain task names, blocked apps, card contents, topics, your name or anything you typed.
You can switch analytics off in Settings → Privacy, and you can reset the install ID at any time, which disconnects everything sent before from everything sent after. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in understanding and improving the app, balanced by the data being anonymous and the switch being one tap away.
4. The waitlist and email (keptfocus.app)
If you join the waitlist on our website you give us your email address so we can tell you when Kept is available. We use Netlify's form service to collect it. Legal basis: consent, which you can withdraw by replying to any email or writing to hello@keptfocus.app.
5. TestFlight
During the beta, Apple's TestFlight may share crash logs and usage statistics with us in line with Apple's own TestFlight terms, which you agree to when you install a beta. We don't add anything to what Apple collects.
Where data is kept
Our servers run on Supabase in its London (eu-west-2) region. Push notifications go through Apple's push service. Deck generation goes through Anthropic (United States). We don't use advertising SDKs, ad networks or data brokers, and we don't sell personal data.
How long we keep it
- On-phone data: until you delete it or the app.
- Buddy account data: until you sign out and remove your pairing, or ask us to delete it. Unlock requests are kept for 30 days and then deleted.
- Make-a-deck server records: 90 days, then deleted.
- Analytics events: 12 months, then deleted.
- Waitlist emails: until you unsubscribe, or 12 months after launch, whichever is sooner.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, object to or restrict how we use it, and ask for it in a portable format. Email hello@keptfocus.app and we'll respond within a month. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Children
Kept is not directed at children under 13, and you must be 13 or over to use it. If you're under 18 we take extra care: no data is used to profile you, there are no advertising features, and the app is designed without pressure tactics. If you think a child has given us personal data, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes
If we change how Kept handles data we'll update this page and the date at the top, and we'll tell beta testers directly. We won't quietly widen what we collect.
